meta: making virtual reality a reality

Let’s consider how addictive social media is for a moment. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok… the list goes on and on, and they all entertain us for hours. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we especially saw ourselves clinging to the virtual world for both work and leisure. Now, what if all that content was even more immersive? That’s what we’ll be looking forward to if the vision for Meta comes to fruition. But what is it exactly? And how might it affect our lives down the road? Let’s explore what we know so far about Meta and how it can influence our professional and personal lives.

What Is Meta, or the Metaverse?

Meta (meaning “beyond” in Greek, in case you were wondering) is the new company name for Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg has big plans to move Facebook beyond a social media platform and expand it into the virtual world of the metaverse. In a presentation, Mark Zuckerberg explained that the name “Meta'' represents “the full breadth of what we do and the future we want to help build.” Long story short: it would use virtual reality or augmented reality to integrate our digital lives and our real lives. There’s only so much we know about the metaverse so far, but it may involve headsets, an avatar for every user, and more to fully incorporate our personal and professional lives into a digital landscape.

What Does This Mean For You?

Since Facebook designs its mobile app software based on Apple and Google’s operating systems, it’s limited to their respective guidelines. However, if Facebook becomes a metaverse pioneer, then it would be free of any constraints from Apple and Google. This means that Facebook would be responsible for making and selling VR/AR equipment for the metaverse, as well as any apps in the metaverse. Facebook is a powerful force on the internet as it is today, but expanding to the metaverse would make it even more influential. Facebook could gain more users and products, in addition to having a bigger impact on the way we socialize, work, and entertain ourselves. In other words, we could find ourselves plugged into VR/AR headsets to sit in a conference room with our coworkers, hang out at a lounge with our friends, and much more - all in the metaverse with our respective avatars.
